School Closures

What to Know About School Closures, Snow Days and More

Throughout the school year, unforeseen events – everything from snowstorms and power outages to extreme heat advisories and other extraordinary circumstances – can result in District schools to close.

But how do you, as a parent/guardian, find out?

Should any of these events occur, the District has many ways to inform students, staff, and families. For starters, alerts will be display at the top of the District website as well as the websites of any impacted schools. As well, the District will post updates on its social media channels – X, Facebook and Instagram – to provide families with information about closures, or provide other instructions due to external conditions.

In the event that inclement weather has left you without internet connectivity, the District advises families to call a relative or friend in an area that has not been affected by the storm and ask them to check the District website for you.

Additionally, media outlets such as CKWX 1130AM, CKNW 980AM, Country Radio 107.1FM, Pulse 107.7 or CBC 690AM and 88.1FM will provide updates on snow days and sometimes other closures due to inclement weather.

As well, school-closure information can also be obtained by calling the board office during regular business hours: 604-534-7891.

When it comes to snow days, it is important to note that all District schools are considered open until a decision to close is required. Therefore, if there are no closures announced, it means that schools are open. Decisions on snow-related school closures are made by 6:30 a.m., and the District aims to inform families of closures as early as possible.

As always, it’s a parent or guardian’s decision whether or not to send their child to school, based on safety and individual circumstances. If you feel it is unsafe for you or your child to travel to or attend an open school for any reason, please keep your child home and report an absence to the school.
