What is it?

How do employers benefit?
- Training workers from the start their careers
- Getting access to the next generation of workers
- Giving back to and investing in the local community
- Helping students learn a trade while earning credits towards high school graduation
- Working hours for students during regular school days and/or hours (if student schedule allows)
- Earning tax credits of up to 20% of the apprentices annual salary
How do students benefit?
- Allowing them to “earn while they learn”
- Getting a head start on their careers while still attending secondary school (could be certified in a trade before they are 20 years old)
- Having a smoother transition from school to work
- Up to four high school courses that provide graduation credits to students for completing up to 480 hours of paid apprenticeship work.
- Being eligible to receive Youth Work in Trades $1000 from SkilledTradesBC and Ministry of Education (if criteria are met)
What are the employer’s responsibilities? 
- Having an experienced tradesperson oversee the apprenticeship
- Maintaining active WorkSafe BC coverage for employees
- Understanding the youth apprenticeship process
- Completing required documents and training plan
- Hiring, paying and providing meaningful work to/for the apprentice
- Submitting Work-Based Training Hours Reports to Skilled Trades BC

Documents to register a youth apprentice complete:
- A Work Site Analysis is completed by Langley School District staff when visiting a new employer to assess workplace safety.
- Skilled Trades BC – Registration – Youth Work in Trades (Youth Apprentice) – For reference only, a prefilled form will be provided
- Skilled Trades BC – Work-based Training Report – Documents how many hours the student has completed as a signed apprentice – For reference only, a prefilled form will be provided
- Skilled Trades BC – Program Profile and Program Outline – Select the appropriate trade to find these documents. Describes the apprenticeship process for each trade
